Boxed In

Let's play with pleats. There are so many types of pleats and they can be styled in so many ways. Today I want to focus on something super feminine and professional but paired with the right top, it's a bit Mad Men and a bit sexy. Let's look at some box pleat skirts.

I'm sure you're saying 'where in the world would I wear this?' Ok, crop top and heels for a fancy dinner or reception, fitted sheer sweater and tights, black leather jacket and a simple tank. This skirt is going to do it all.

A ladylike a-line shape makes the horizontal stripe easy to wear.

Forever 21, Heathered A-Line Skirt, $19
Sweatshirt skirt? Count. Me. In.

Modcloth, Demure Galore Skirt, $79
This skirt is very First Lady. I would paid it with dot tights and kitten heels.

Styled the right way, the box pleat skirt is going to work for work and for dressier occasions. Pay attention to how the pleats lay on your midsection. It's better to size up then have a bubble situation going on. The pleats should lie perfectly flat so the skirt creates a long line from the torso to the hem line.

Straight A Skirts

It's Monday lovebugs,
Let's not get too technical today. Let's keep it simple. A line simple. A line black and white monochrome. A closet staple and the every woman needs at least one of in her closet.

Saks of Fifth, Joie Lissome A Line Skirt, $69
70% off. Perforation detail to the max. Love this for end of summer.

High waisted scuba. So ladylike and classic.

Forever 21, Polka Dot A Line Skirt, $17
Polka dot pockets, party of one?

This skirt has so much movement it borders on musical. One of those 'must-twirl' skirts.

Nothing off the wall of edge today. Black, white, a line is all I need on this Monday.

For the Love of Flippy Skirts

Let's have some fun on this Friday eve. I'm talking about stripes and polka dots. A fun way to round out the week and we're doing it with skirts. Flirty, fun, and downright fantastic prints.

Modcloth, Stripe it Lucky Skirt, $44
Oh hello fun. Perfect box pleats, thick monochrome stipe, nothing better.

Shabby Apple, Dorothy Skirt, $72
Have you met Shabby Apple? It's retro, boho, anther, chic, and so many options are under $100. And please check out the tulle on this skirt.

This skirt is a four season one. Pair it with tights in the winter and boots in the fall. Perfect texture for all year round.

Last Call Neiman Marcus, JOA Polka Dot A Line Skirt, $79
Perfectly ladylike. I love this skirt for work or date night.

Fringe Benefits

Happy Monday lovebugs,
I thought we would spice things up on this wintery Monday and look at some sassy skirts. These skirts are not meant for your 9-5, your dinner with gramma, or Sunday church. These skirts are meant for dancing, for dates, and for daring evenings out. Today, we look at fringe tiered skirts. Why? Because these minis have movement and flare and they are perfect for perking up your Monday.

Forever 21, Tiered Fringe Mini Skirt, $19
Three layers or fringe makes this skirt perfect for the dance floor.

Nordstrom, Vince Camuto Fringe Pencil Tiered Skirt, $96
Zigzag fringe? Don't mind if I do Vince!

Last Call Neiman Marcus, Max Studio Tiered Faux Leather Skirt, $59
All over mini fringe on a mini skirt, this is a party.

Singer22, WYLDR Keep It Together Mini Skirt, $58
The price point on this mini is so easy on the wallet. I love the almost confetti-like look.

You can buy a sparkly holiday dress, or a velvet mini for the company party, but these options will work for a night out any day of the year.

Opa's Accordion

I'm going to share a little family history today that will lead to one epic segue. I'm German so I have an Oma and Opa (gramma and grandpa). Whenever my family went to visit Oma and Opa in Buffalo we would have a delicious meal prepared by Oma and then we would retire to the living room where Opa would break out his accordion and my sister and I would dance around the room in circles. I remember this very clearly because the accordion has such a specific sound to it and that sound is created by a very unique squeezebox (yes that is the real term, look it up). So let's take a page from Opa and look at some beautiful accordion skirts.

American Apparel, Pleated Skirt, $52
I love the high waisted fit of this skirt because its a bit ballerina.

Last Call Neiman Marcus, Robbi & Nikki Faux Leather Pleated Skirt, $69
A beautiful navy with a contrasting waistband is professional while still perfect for twirling.

Modcloth, Cupcake Liner Skirt, $32
A great contrast skirt that is a great length for 9-5 with tights and some booties.

Madewell, Mini Houndstooth Skirt, $98
The patterned mini is so unusual with this type of pleat. In my opinion this skirt is basically a neutral to be paired with any other color like merlot or forest green

One of my favorite things about the accordion skirt is the movement. It's flouncy and girly but paired with the right top or motorcycle jacket you can make it edgy.

I'm So Full

Sometimes when I want to feel feminine I put away the ribbons and the headbands, and dig out a big beautiful full a-line skirt. There is something intriguing about the volume and the need to do twirls is, well, understandable.

See what I mean? Lipstick red, lots of movement. Just lovely.

Modcloth, Essential Elegance Skirt, $69
A bright shade of green that will stand up to some layering. Try a graphic sweater with a patterned oxford underneath.

Shabby Apple, Stewart Skirt, $62
A simple gray with a removable sash so you can swap out your belts as you wish.

OK I may have saved the best for last. Check out this leather stunner.

So do a couple twirls and feel like a lady in these full midlength skirts.

Swing Dance

There are all kinds of skirts out there: pencil skirt, mini skirt, paneled skirt, the list goes on and on. One skirt trend that I'm loving right now is the swing skirt. It looks just like it sounds. Fun, flirty, and all sorts flip.

Dillard's, ING Neon Swing Skirt, $29
Can you please pass my shades? Woo! Check out this color! Hello, hello!

This is a little biker-chic isn't it? Pair this with some killer heels.

This is work-ready, I'd love to pair this with my yellow suede pumps.

Dorothy Perkins, Grey Paneled Skirt, $39
A great mini-pattern that almost acts like a neutral.

Swing skirts are a great way to mix in some fun to your 9-5 wardrobe or for a date night. For work though, please do the bend down test in the dressing room, as for your date outfit, I don't judge.

Accordion Skirts

Accordion skirts are a ladylike style that I'm loving for the winter. They have great flow and go with just about anything.

Forever 21, polka dot accordion skirt, $24
I love the ribbon waistband and we all know I'm a sucker for dots.

I'd pair this with a tie neck blouse. Perfect for work.

This is a great mini, I'd pair it with tights are a v-neck sweater.

This is gorgeous. I love the chocolate color, I love the waist, together it's very retro.

Do you own any accordion skirts? They're a great option to mix in with your pencil skirts.

Brown Bag It

Happy Columbus Day lovebugs.  Most of Washington has off today but alas, I'm at work.  I hope you're sleeping in right now and have big plans to do absolutely nothing.

Today I thought we would look at a trend that I'm really loving right now: paper bag waist.  It's a great way to add interest to the mid section of an outfit and hide anything you want to in that area.

There are so many details going on with this skirt but they all work together beautifully: color, slanted pocket, waist, mini length.

You know I'm a sucker for dots.  I'd pair these with some tights for a Friday night out!

I love this skirt. So beautiful and you can wear it all year round.

J Crew, Heather lace mini, $50
Beautiful lace in a neutral gray. This would be really special with tights.

What do you think of the paper bag style waist? I think it's something a little different then the plain waistline.

Do you Degas?

Recently, a friend of mine said she has been inspired by Degas dancers and their skirts.
So I thought we should look at some beautiful skirts that are Degas-esque!  These skirts have an A-line structure and have just a little "poof" to them.  Not always tutu-like but think more ballerina inspired.

Banana Republic, ruffle hem skirt, $45
This skirt is so delicate and graceful, especially in this soft pink color.

This mini is perfect for a twirl.  I really like the print on it.

Modcloth, Special Guest Skirt, $50
Oh you know I'm a sucker for dots.  And the pin tuck pleating by the waist line is just beautiful.

Ann Taylor, Salient pintuck skirt, $88
A great white skirt for summer.  Perfect with flats, heels, or sandals.

Has anything inspired your fashion lately? I'm really loving the light nature of these skirts.
